How about this tiny “lean-to” shed as a tiny house, or guest house?

Sheds April 6, 2017

Impressive Lean-To

These little sheds, which, when we look at them, we’re also considering using them as cabins, backyard cottages, guest houses, and even perhaps tiny homes, is called the “Lean To” and it’s by Social Sheds, who we’ve featured here a couple times before, because they have a range of small sheds in various types.

From the builder about this particular design:

“Lean-To sheds have the versatility to fit into tight spaces while remaining a great looking shed in its own right! The single direction sloped roof lends itself to narrow spaces such as your side yard while shedding water away from the house. The height and roof slope can be easily altered, as needed, to fit below eaves of your home or even mobile home awnings.”

Tall Gambrel A Big Space for You

These little sheds, which, when we look at them, we’re also considering using them as cabins, backyard cottages, guest houses, and even perhaps tiny homes, is called the “Gambrel” and it’s by Social Sheds, who we’ve featured here a couple times before, because they have a range of small sheds in various types.

From the builder about this particular design, the 10′ x 12′ Tall Gambrel:

“This shed is rapidly becoming one of our most popular models. With standard 8′ sidewall height (most of our competitors charge extra for this) and a classic barn profile that means a high ceiling and lots of storage volume. This model also allows for the addition of storage lofts up high for added storage area without using up all your valuable floor space. With a modified floor system you can even park a tractor or other vehicle inside!”

The rear patio area also has another zone, a small corner for those who want privacy.

The open floor plan includes places many elements in a single room. The front corner of the living room has a sofa with simple wooden tables. Next to it is the dining table. And a kitchen counter.

Compact Off-road Caravans

Tiny House December 18, 2016

Compact Off-road Caravans

Can you name something these little trailers DON’T have?

Ok, just taking a look at what little towable trailer units are like these days? They’ve come a long way since the first travel trailers, basic, uninsulated, without power systems and cooking stations. Definitely without solar panels.

Let’s take a look at these new Kimberly models:

Standard: Lithium Batteries, all super-light Black Optima Solar arrays with new smart controllers, and the Smart Touch Plus. This system only reads information and is NOT a remote control system. We still use traditional switches. Most models have Smart refrigeration and all are equipped for the automated waterless toilet if you choose this option.

Lithium Batteries

  • 200Ahr Lithium Battery in every model
  • 600Ahr available for Kruiser S, T Class
  • Bluetooth connected for monitoring and event records
  • Charges at twice the speed of conventional AGM or Lead crystal batteries
  • Great weight reduction.
  • Long cycle life

Smart Touch Plus systems

  • NEW Gorilla Glass high definition display in every model
  • Batteries, water tank levels on all models.
  • Solar, Inverter, Fridge and Freezer temp and power on selected models
  • Smartphone bluetooth connected for every model.
  • With Kimberley SmartRV on Wifi*, there is remote service access to your system from anywhere in the world. Security feature prevents spamming.

Smartphone app for every model: easy to follow second screen:

  • for battery, water levels, grey water, solar system, refrigeration.
  • Bluetooth connection : no internet needed.
  • “Future proof” with planned CI-Bus compatibility to Dometic, Truma, and Alko products. This should enable remote control of air-conditioning and heating from your smartphone. (CI-Bus is Caravan Industry Bus which Kimberley is committed to)

New MPPT solar controllers (also bluetooth app connected) will replenish energy much faster with the Black Optima Solar: 140W – 1,020W
The greatest innovation to off-road camping is the waterless toilet:

  • 80 uses, no smell, no need for dump station.
  • Available in every model and equipped with:
    • a booster fan,
    • a 12V heater
    • and a removable liner.

Actually, there’s even more to them than these modern features listed. We’ll feature them again in the future with a bit more info on what these modern RVing units have to offer.

Build your own Teardrop Trailer, DIY

Uncategorized December 18, 2016

Build your own Teardrop Trailer, DIY

Who wants to take a trip out to a local campsite, or even a long road trip without having to shell out for hotels along the way. Teardrop trailers are small, easy to store, easy to tow, and now … easy to build … RVing options.

This one was built a couple of years ago by a fellow named Ioan, an Oregonian programmer who took a DIY teardrop trailer on as his first build project, working in the evenings after 8pm and sometimes on weekends.

His plan was to keep his build under 1500-2000 dollars, considering there are plenty of plans (and retail offers) of teardrop trailers for 4-11 thousand.

He also wanted to pull it with a small car – his Hyundai Sonata (1000lb pound max towing). So the teardrop, fully loaded, was to be under 700 pounds.

Here’s his part list:

Trailer.
Doors.
Vent.
Porch Lights.
Dome Light.
Water pump.
Hatch handles.
Aluminum.

And a list of the tools he used to build this DIY teardrop trailer:

Box cutter
Pencil
Framing square
Wrenches. Big ones.(16mm, 17mm, 18mm)
Wireless drill
Jigsaw
Chop saw
Table saw
Sander
Belt sander

Take a look at this slick houseboat design. Rooftop deck, anyone?

Take a look at this slick houseboat design. Rooftop deck, anyone?

The Libell is a spacious houseboat that blends harmoniously with nature, currently in the planning phase of development, but worth a look I think because of the striking design appearance.

It is largely a self-sufficient houseboat, relocating by motor to find quiet secluded places to camp out.

It offers a high quality of living with room climate control that allows year-round use.

How about a houseboat that’s a steamboat?

Houseboats December 18, 2016

How about a houseboat that's a steamboat?

Did you say “steamboat?” Yes, an actual steamboat! It’s Bruce Benton’s sternwheel paddleboat the “Taste of Being.” When was the last time you saw something like this (if ever)?

It’s a 40 foot long trailerable steamboat.

According to Benton:

“She’s plywood with 2-3 layers of fiberglass, a 40 hp Westerbeke diesel 12.7 KVD gen-set with hydraulic pump on front. Hyd. “motor on wheel,” 30 rpm., 8-1/2 in. draft at stern. Six bunks, head, galley, refrigerator/freezer and apartment-sized 4 burner 220v range with oven.”

He bought this unit originally from a Canadian Boat Buyer type ad after flying up to Edmonton, AB to make the purchase. Then he did a bunch of work to make it sea worthy (it was originally outfitted for freshwater).

Would you believe this is his first fully constructed boat?

Home Made DIY Houseboat

Home Made DIY Houseboat

Who has ever thought about living on the water, or even having a sailboat or big boat they can spend at least some time on the water with … or even hang out in the harbor? Well, how about building your own small houseboat?

Not only can you store it on your property, you can transport it easily, motor around in it on the lake or ocean, and live or vacation on it at a marina.

This houseboat was built on a used 1995 Hurricane deck boat hull. I live in Florida and go north for the summer. When I come back next year in October I will finish the interior.

You can get an idea of the project from the photos, although if if anyone has more info on the process of building this houseboat, or even another DIY houseboat build, we’d like to know about it too, and share it with everyone.

Home Box Container House

Shipping Container Buildings December 18, 2016

Home Box Container House

There’s more than one way to set up a shipping container house! Who wants a view, with just one shipping container? I think this might help getting a vantage point!

It’s the “Home Box Container House” and its an experimental house built by HomeBoxes. How big is the footprint? Using the same philosophy that led to skyscrapers on expensive land, these guys built up.
