Building Structures with Local Natural Materials

Building Structures with Local Natural Materials

If you are seeking to build your next home or vacation retreat, it may be worth your time to take a look at what Earthen Shelter is doing in the art of “natural building”. Employing the practice and art of building structures with local and naturally sourced materials, natural building practices integrate and build within the existing environments and local communities with a minimal amount of adverse effect – if any – on the environment. In fact, if anything, their goal – so to speak – is to build homes and structures that flow with the land in which they’re built.

For instance, if one lives in the desert southwest where most of the days of the year are filled hot sunny days and cool nights being a thing to be savored, then an adobe style earthen home with thick walls would probably be your best bet. In particular, if the lay of the property allows for it, if one is able to build against or actually into an existing hillside. Where the earth itself acts as a natural insulator of sorts from the elements – keeping you cooler in the summer and warmer during the colder months by retaining the coolness of the evening or the warmth from the sun. Of course we’re not suggesting that you go completely “primitive” in this respect – as there are numerous options available to the prospective home builder looking to leave a minimal carbon footprint when building their next home.

The most commonly used natural materials used include a combination of any or all of the following: clay soils, various sands, sand and flag stone as well as a variety of different fibers to include straw, bamboo, locally sourced wood as well as the ever popular hemp. Earthen shelters seeks to blend a number of of building practices and traditions from around the world and integrate them with those of modern day when building their homes. A few of the techniques used are cob, light straw clay, adobe, earthbag, and strawbale – using them to build houses, wood fired earthen ovens, earthen plasters and wall finishes, and earthen floors.  Truly, one seeking to build and earthen structure is only limited by their imagination as the environment has long since provided just about every resource we need in order to lead a self-sustainable lifestyle.

This Cabin-style 276 square ft. tiny house was originally designed and built for the now retired professional basketball player, Matt Bonner, which was featured on the HGtv show Tiny House Nation. And in order to accommodate the new owner’s 6’10” height, the designers were quite successful in creating a tiny house that was both comfortable and spacious for it’s towering new owner.

A small fireplace was also included adding additional warmth and ambience. The bathroom area features fixtures simple yet pleasing to the eye with a ceramic bowl style sink set a top a wood table top style vanity, curtained custom tiled walk in shower and commode. The kitchen includes an apartment sized built in stainless steel refrigerator, single stainless steel sink and a two burner built in cooktop stove.

Incredible Rustic Tiny Home

Tiny House July 4, 2016

Incredible Rustic Tiny Home

The rustic inspired tiny home by Incredible Tiny Homes boasts a simple rugged simplistic design exterior with solid wood paneled sides and deep red metal corners encasing the corners of the structure. The home itself measures 10′ x 32′ in length and has an interior size of approximately 320 square ft of living space.

Inside we found the kitchen to be the more favorable feature with a large double stainless steel sink, mini sized gas range and stainless steel refrigerator. The cabinets have a somewhat basic primitive design constructed with a honey oak stained wood and cast iron pulls. The hard wood flooring is carried throughout the home with a combination of light and dark colored stain. The bathroom features a tiny house size tub, large “rain” shower head, antique styled table top vanity with copper bowl style basin and a stackable washer and dryer unit.

The bedroom is quaint and comfortable with walk around areas on either side of the full sized bed and end table style lighting fixtures on either side. In the living room per cet is actually combined within the far side of the kitchen and comes with a small cozy modestly styled sofa nestled against the wall. Overall, this rustic tiny home is quite appealing to the eye and would really make quite a comfortable addition to the tiny home traveler.

Travel Trailers – The New ‘Tiny House’

Tiny House July 1, 2016

Remember the summers when hopping in the car with mom and dad, travel trailer in tow and heading up the windy road to the lake immediately brought to mind the smell of roasting marshmallows and campfire smoke? Well, the travel trailer has become the new chic  and tiny home of today. It spells freedom and gives you a way to see the countryside yet still have all the comforts of home right there with you. More and more folks are ditching the huge mortgage and choosing to embrace those beautiful and glorious memories of summertime camping, all year round.

With design options only as limiting as you’re imagination, you can choose and create anywhere from the retro style of the 70’s to the modern chic amenities and conveniences of a full size home. Who wouldn’t just love to pick up their house and “go” whenever one chose to replace the boring life of suburbia for the beach! The freedom in and of itself is freedom in joining the new “tiny house” revolution.

One-of-a-kind Rustic Mini Home

Tiny House June 30, 2016

One-of-a-kind Rustic Mini Home

The Earth and Sky palace offers a cozy warm space inside ideal for travel through all the seasons of the year. My favorite feature being that of a stainless steel finished wood burning stove – perfect for those cold winter days – and nights while watching the snow quietly fall outside.

The 200 square ft space believe it or not even allows room for a full walk around bed on one end. On the other a large bathroom with an elegantly designed vanity counter top. The kitchen features a long horizontal window above the farmhouse style kitchen sink and stainless steel gas range unit. Even with this homes minimal square footage – the openness and rustic cabin design doesn’t lend itself to feeling “small”.
