Shipping containers, due to their strength and availability (as used purchases) have been having a continued effect on the world of house building. Everything from tiny homes to large mansion-like ones are built using shipping containers.
And now we have a shipping container houseboat. This one was a bit of a surprise to me because I always thought of metal container bins as heavy, but I’ve also read about the flotation capacities of large pontoons, so really it shouldn’t be the surprise that it is.
Recently I came across this interesting company that is compiling lots of shipping container house designs into a pdf downloadable book, called, you might have guessed it, “Container Home.”
This is one of the shipping container houses they chronicled. It’s a houseboat built by boat builder Steve White from 2 X 20 foot type one HC shipping containers. The purpose of this houseboat? Steve intends to reside in it. It was originally parked in Brooklyn Marina, Maine, and for all we know it’s still there.
“This unusual Project is a collaboration between a number of people including Boat Builder Andrew Baldwin, Welding services by Kustom Steel, Insulation & Interior framework by SnapSpace Solutions and Jennifer Sansosti and Trevor Seip.
“The two Shipping Containers are placed offset and joined together by a wall that extends up to a second floor loft. The entire house is set on a 30’x50’ barge and creates a cozy, spacious home. The entire houseboat measures 24’x40’ and has around 1,000 square feet of living space, which includes two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen.”
